Athletics Look To Continue Winning As Season Winds Down
After a tough start to 2014 the Grande Prairie Athletics seem to have found their stride once more just in time as the NPHL Regular Season winds down to a close.
The Athletics finished last week with two wins over the Hythe Mustangs (4-13) and the Falher Pirates (12-6) to push their own record to 14-4 and maintain second place in the Western Division of the North Peace Hockey League.
Grande Prairie currently trails the Fort St. John Flyers by three points for first place but also has the luxury of having three games in hand.
With just 6 games remaining in the NPHL regular season for the Athletics every game is getting more important.
Scheduling this week seems almost identical to last week. Grande Prairie will travel to Hythe tonight before hosting a home game at the Coca Cola Centre against another Eastern Division team. This week will be the 8 and 10 Grimshaw Huskies. With Fort St. John off until next Friday the A’s will have an opportunity to regain first place with two more games this week.
With a win over Hythe last Thursday the Athletics officially clinched a playoff berth pushing the total of teams to three who have qualified for the post season in the West. The only spot remaining well belong to either Dawson Creek or Hythe…and oddly enough the Athletics could play the part of spoiler for the Mustangs heading into tonights action.
With just seven games remaining in their schedule the Mustangs will need to win each and every game while asking for a lot of favours from other teams. A loss tonight to the A’s would officially eliminate Hythe from post season contention.
Both teams have something to play for which should make for another entertaining NPHL hockey game.
Opening face-off will take place at 8:30pm at the Hythe Arena.
